Oathbringer: Book Three of the Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson

Oathbringer is the third book in the Stormlight Archive series written by Brandon Sanderson. It is a fantasy series that features a complex magical system, medieval weapons, and deep world building. Oathbringer continues the exciting story of a large cast of characters as they struggle to survive in a world rife with war. Humans have been fighting humans for as long as anyone can remember. They fight for conquest and power. They fight for access to the hearts of monsters that can be infused with light and are each worth a fortune. They fight for revenge and pride.

With the coming of a new and terrible storm called the Everstorm, an old enemy has emerged. The Voidbringers are back, and their goal is to wipe out all of humanity. They want revenge for their enslavement, and now, with the backing of a god, they have the power to fight back. It is up to Dalinar Kholin to try to unite the realms of men to defend their kingdoms from the might of the Voidbringers. Unfortunately, the Voidbringers can fly, and when they are killed, they are reborn in a new Pashman body, so that is problematic. They also command giant rock creatures.

The same crew from the previous books is here to do their respective parts to help fight against the Voidbringers. Shallan uses her light-weaving abilities to create powerful illusions to confuse the enemy. Kaladan uses his winddancing abilities and shardspear made from a spren named Syl to serve and protect. Their main goal is to take back the Capitol city of Kholinar from an unknown source of corruption and to save it before the Voidbringers breach their walls. As Kaladan, Shallan, Adolin, Elohkar, and others infiltrate Knolinar, Dhalinar attempts to unite the kingdoms of men in hopes of creating a force strong enough to fight against the Voidbringers. Despite his efforts, Dhalinar is not a diplomat, and his violent reputation makes it hard to trust him. Will the humans work together to defend against annihilation, or will infighting and secret plots tear them apart?

Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive series is a ton of fun, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy. It is well written, and while it has a complex world to uncover, Sanderson introduces information in a methodical and effective pace. With so many characters and back stories and events and foreshadowing and details, it is not always possible to hold it all in your head at once, but Sanderson does a good job reiterating important aspects and keeping things as simple as possible in the moment. I enjoy these books a lot and can't wait to get into the fourth book, Rhythm of War.
