Book Review: Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas
Crown of Midnight is the second book in the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas. It continues the story of Celaena Sardothien aka Elantiya, who won a contract to be the King of Adarlan’s champion, aka assassin, in the first book, Throne of Glass. Now, Celaena spends her days stalking and killing the King's enemies but what we soon discover is that she has been secretly faking their deaths and sending them away. This puts not only her own life in jeopardy but the king has also threatened her best friend the Captain of the Guard Chaol and her other best friend Princess Nehemiah and both their families if Celaena doesn't do her job as he desires or fails to return from a job.
Her next assignment is to track down the supposed leader of a growing revolution named Archer Finn who happens to have trained in the same assassin school as Celaena but is now a high-priced male prostitute. She is given one month to track him down and kill him for the king but when she discovers what he is up to she decides to allow him to fake his death in exchange for information about the revolution. While she is working to find out what Archer truly knows she is also discovering more and more about what happened that removed magic from the world and how the king has become so powerful.
She discovers secrets hidden deep within the castle and learns more about her troubled past. She also falls for the stoic Chaol and then almost kills him when she finds out he has been keeping secrets. A lot is going on in this book and I found it to be my favorite of the series so far. It has a ton of action and intrigue and the momentum keeps going until an intense climax that forces everything to change. It was very fun to read and I couldn't get enough. I can't wait to find out what happens next in Celaena’s harrowing journey. I recommend Crown of Midnight to anyone who enjoys fantasy and adventure and obviously, if you enjoyed Throne of Glass you should continue with this entry.
