Book Review: Prison of Hope by Steve McHugh
If you liked the previous entries in the Hellequin Series then you will like this one. It continues the story of Nathan Garrett aka Helliquin and unlocks a ton of his history. As more of Nate’s past is unveiled we learn more about how his notorious reputation solidified in the hidden world of the supernatural. Without spoiling it I will say that Nate was a vengeful psychopath but even after all of it, it seems that everyone still likes him kind of like how Dexter can be a hero and a serial killer.
In Prison of Hope, we learn about the true nature of Pandora who has the power to manipulate the minds of anyone she touches and enslave them to do her bidding. Pandora is a kind of demon stuck in the body of a normal woman named Hope. While Pandora is very angry at her makers and retaliates by causing wars and chaos Hope is just along for the ride. Lucky for us Nate is the only one that she can’t enthrall and so he is the one who chases her down whenever she escapes her prisons. It is easy to sympathize with Hope as she didn’t choose to be taken over by a vengeful demon but is still one of the most powerful evils the world has known.
The main plotline and there are a few, centers around Nate and his gang trying to track down an ancient Titan God who has escaped Tartarus before they kill the Ancient Olympian God Hera for her role in killing the Titan God’s son. It was hard to keep up with all the backstories and characters in this book but the action that ensues makes it all worth it. Nate is an extremely powerful sorcerer but still manages to get himself knocked out, beaten up, and almost killed more than the wife of an NFL superstar. He always seems to get lucky or pull out some powerful new spell that saves him. Because almost everyone is supernatural fighting doesn’t typically end in deaths but instead in hurt feelings and vows of vengeance.
All in all, this was a very fun book to read, and while it has a lot of moving parts and I didn’t keep up with everything the characters made it enjoyable and easy to keep going. As always, the books in this series have very climactic and satisfying endings. Nate is a very likable character with his humor, charm, and noble morality. His friends are all very likable as well and it is fun to route for the good guys in these stories. I recommend this book to those who enjoyed the previous series especially if you want to learn more about Nate and the world he belongs to.
