Book Review: Carl's Doomsday Scenario by Matt Dinniman
If you haven’t read Dungeon Crawler Carl, then there is no reason to read Carl’s Doomsday Scenario because these books are meant to be read in series. Thus far, the series spans 7 full-length novels, and while I’ve only read two of them, I am invested. The combination of sci-fi themes, video game action, and clever storytelling is a recipe for non-stop entertainment.
Carl’s Doomsday Scenario continues Carl and Donut’s journey through the deadly multi-level dungeon that aliens have forced them to participate in for the enjoyment of a galactic-sized audience. The company that is running the show is desperate to make as much money as possible and is speeding up the show in an effort not to go bankrupt. Carl and Donut are now on level three, which is modeled after a post-apocalyptic city, The Over City, where everything has been corrupted into horrific versions of their former selves. There are mold lions, killer clowns, and knife-wielding lemurs.
And artilary giraffes, and mycotoxin vines, and flying humaoids, and angelic elite tattooed elves.
Upon entering level three, Carl and Donut are now able to pick their races and classes, which means that they can start to really specialize in their combat styles in an effort to maximize their effectiveness and survivability. Carl chooses to be what is called a Primal, which is a race of ancient beings with powers not quite understood, but he can keep his body, so he chooses that one. Donut chooses to stay a cat but adds the class of Former Child Actor, which allows her to change her class attributes for each level. Carl chooses a class known as a Compensated Anarchist, which complements his penchant for explosions.
Carl and Donut are on a mission to level up as quickly as possible, and they plan to simply grind out experience but stay away from difficult, potentially deadly quests or bosses. As usual, nothing quite goes to plan, and they end up doing exactly what they didn’t want to do. They get forced into a crazy, difficult quest when a mostly naked elf holds Donut hostage unless Carl does what he wants. She is too powerful to fight directly, so he reluctantly agrees to help her. Later, Carl and Donut end up trying to solve a mystery where prostitutes are being slaughtered and thrown back to earth. This is supposed to be an easy quest, but it ends up being very complicated and with the potential to kill dozens of players and NPCs. Everything is escalating fast for Carl and Donut, and they have to work together to survive. Also, Mongo, the ferocious velociraptor, is there to help.
Carl’s Doomsday Scenario was a ton of fun, and if you liked Dungeon Crawler Carl, you will want to continue to series. I feel like there is no turning back on this fun story, and I will have to continue reading the series to find out what happens next. The characters continue to develop, and my attachment to them continues to evolve. I highly recommend these books, and I’m excited to get into the next one soon.
