Nihilism doesn’t exist. It is a paradox. If there is no meaning then the word nihilism can’t have any meaning and therefore nihilism doesn’t exist. If nihilism has a meaning then meaning exists and nihilism exists only as a paradoxical concept. The meaning that allows for a word to be useful is the same meaning that makes anything else useful so the idea that there is no meaning to life is the same as saying there is no meaning to words. Life is useful and behaviors are useful toward certain goals. Words are tools of humans and help with survival. The meaning that exists within words is the same as the meaning that exists within our conceptualization of meaning anywhere else. There may be no ultimate meaning to your life but you create meaning from your life and others create meaning from your life. You can simply assign meaning by seeking a goal such as surviving or mating or getting money or seeking peace or seeking destruction. Anytime you act in a way that leads toward a goal you create meaning locally.
Others create meaning from your life by using your life as a means toward their goals. If they rely on you for something then you have a utilitarian meaning to them. Emotional meanings are also useful. Bonding creates bodily triggers that indicate meaning and usefulness in relation to others. Hormones and neurotransmitters compel action and influence thoughts. These create meaning in that we assign causes to them and attempt to trigger them or avoid them with our behavior. This creates goals and goals are the precursor to meaning. Why do something? Because I want something. Why did you do something? Because It means something to do it. It means that some outcome is likely and that I am seeking that outcome. Nihilism says that any effort is ultimately meaningless but this assumes that there can be ultimate meaning but that is not where meaning comes from. Meaning does not come from the top down, it comes from the bottom up. There does not have to be religious meaning for there to be meaning.
Morality is unavoidable if there are others involved. All interactions between people are mediated by rules. These rules are the roots of morality. There are consequences to behavior and that creates meaning because these consequences presume some outcome is expected. Any action that takes into consideration possible outcomes creates meaning to the act. Using words like nihilism has meaning because there is an outcome expected from using that word. When someone says they are a nihilist they want someone to understand something about them. Usually, this is that person doesn’t believe that their life or anyone’s life has meaning which is a paradox because if they truly didn’t believe in a meaning to their life then they would do nothing, including not trying to describe the meaninglessness of their life to others. Why describe something if there is no meaning to it? Why try to explain your thoughts to someone else if it doesn’t matter? It does matter because interacting with people has meaning and consequences to your life.
