I tried out the Sony A7IV and I like it! (Photo Samples)
I have temporary access to the Sony Alpha 7 IV and today was my first opportunity to go out and take some photos. It was a gloomy day in Oregon but I had a great time getting to know this camera in a real-world setting. I wanted to test out its 33MP back-illuminated CMOS full-frame sensor. With the kit 28-70 f3.5-5.6 lens I had a fairly limited focal length and slow aperture but I was impressed with how much I could crop in and how sharp the lens could be in certain circumstances. It was an overcast but bright day so was able to keep my ISO low which also allowed me to crop a little more. I need to get my hands on a better lens to see what kind of sharpness the camera is capable of.
The camera is very light and with that lens, it was easy to hold for the two hours I waited for the Red-Tailed hawk to fly off from its perch but it never did. I didn’t get too deep into the menu but it was easier to navigate than I expected as I am used to the Canon menu system. What I was very impressed with was the speed of the auto-focus. It tracked the plane and birds in high-contrast scenes amazingly well. The tracking with the continuous focus might be the best I’ve seen in any camera I’ve used so far.
I spent most of today off of Marine Drive and then on the way home I stopped by Deep Creek Garden Center to take some shots of flowers. I think they turned out well. It was easy to edit all of the raw files and the dynamic range was impressive. I was able to do a lot with the editing without anything looking unnatural. Well, you can be the judge of my editing skills. The lens was definitely the limiting factor here and if I were to purchase one for myself I would probably get the body only and buy a better lens right away. It is was of Son’t professional level cameras and I would highly recommend it over the Alpha A7 III as that camera is quite a bit older, has a weaker autofocus system, and fewer megapixels.
I took a few quick videos but didn’t put much effort into getting the settings right but I’ll show you what that looks like at the end of this post. I will have to test the video more next time. The only thing I didn’t like was the viewfinder. It had more and was a bit jerky when moving around and it would shift after focusing and refocusing. Maybe there are some settings I could use to fix this but I think my Canon R5 has a better viewfinder.
Stay tuned for more Sony Alpha 7IV tests and reviews!
Here are more sample photos. They are all raw files edited in Lightroom and they are cropped as much as I felt like cropping.
