Book Review: The Drawing of the Three by Stephen King

The Drawing of the Three is the second book in the Dark Tower series written by Stephen King. I have been listening to the audiobooks of The Gunslinger, the first in the series, and The Drawing of the Three, which is read by Frank Muller. His voice acting is excellent and makes the experience exciting and engrossing. I highly recommend the audio version but no matter how you experience these books you will enjoy the mysterious and dramatic world that Stephen King has sculpted.

The Drawing of the Three starts where The Gunslinger left off. Roland awakes on a beach where he is immediately in danger as monstrosities from the sea attempt to devour him with crab claws and questioning gibberish. After the attack, he is gravely injured and has no access to medical remedies. Not one to wallow in despair Roland slowly makes his way down the beach and soon he finds a single door that is not attached to anything. No walls, no roof and yet it is there, standing before him like an invitation to impossible possibilities.

Roland seeks the tower and the fate of everything and everyone he is willing to do anything it takes to get there even if it means sacrificing those he loves. His next task is to enlist the help of three strangers from the other side of three impossible doors. They are known as The Prisoner, The Lady of the Shadows, and The Pusher. As he draws them to his side and his world he faces the challenge of persuading the reluctant and dangerous strangers to work with him. If he dies the adventure is over. If a stranger dies the adventure is over. Can Roland draw the three to his side and fulfill his oath by reaching the Dark Tower?

The Drawing of the Three is a nonstop action-packed adventure with psychological depth and suspenseful vistas that extend to the horizon and beyond. It is a case study of excellent character development, dialogue, plot structure, and efficiency in prose. If you liked The Gunslinger then you have to read The Drawing of the Three and if you haven't checked out The Gunslinger yet then check out my review or just pick it up using my link below.
