Book Review: Rapture Addicts by Channing Cornwall
Rapture Addicts is the newest novel by independent novelist Channing Cornwall and is an example of Channing’s ability to tackle new and diverse genres. In Rapture Addicts Channing explores what happens when people manipulate others into believing in an apocalyptic future so thoroughly that it leads to fatal consequences and how justice can take on the form of relentless vengeance. Along with these themes Channing also explores the strength and passion that drives young love.
Parker and Quinn met when they were barely teens but their connection was immediate. Years later, a mysterious force reunites them and they begin on a road trip that will test their commitment to each other as well as their goal of avenging the wrong done to Parker, her family and the other families that perished when the cult leaders of The White Throne vanished in what they believed was the actual biblical rapture. Believing that they were left behind, the families decided to drink poison in order to forgo the tribulations of the new world. When Parker's mom refuses this fate her father finishes the job with a gun but Parker, after years in a coma, survives.
Quinn became estranged from his family when he decided to dodge the Vietnam War draft. He returns home in an effort to make amends with his mother and sick father but when he finally makes it home he finds the farm sold, his father dead, and his mom running off to live with his uncle. Wayward and alone he hitchhikes his way to nowhere but when he stops at a gas station he sees a familiar face. Parker is somehow waiting for him and even after so long he is still mesmerized by her beauty and steely eyed demeanor. He soons finds his budding love tested when he finds out that she is on a mission to avenge those that fell in The White Throne suicide pact. He also finds out that Parker isn't the only one on a warpath; Broken Horse is there, lingering in the shadows, waiting to kill.
Channing Cornwall is a good friend and I am always happy to find out that he has a new book to devour. His body of work is eclectic and diverse. From apocalyptic futures to the old west. From supernatural horror to romance, Channing covers all sorts of literary ground but he always manages to add his flair for the human condition. The dichotomies of choice and consequences are on display as he highlights the struggle that arrives when humans are forced to choose. Love or hate. Vengeance or peace. Knowledge or ignorance. With every action we travel toward a destiny of our own making whether we see the forks and signs along the way or not.
I recommend Rapture Addicts to anyone interested in a unique tale of love and hate, of obsession and madness and of closure. If you want to support a talented and dedicated independent author then check out Rapture Addicts as well as Channing’s other titles today!
