Top 10 Best Westerns

September 14, 2018 by Joe Gray in Top Tens

Here are my all time top 10 favorite western movies and TV shows. I hope I’m not forgetting any.

#1 Movie

The Revenent is simply one of the the most stunningly beautiful movies I’ve ever seen. Not only that but it is brutal as shit. This movie is a nonstop visual pleasure with it’s incredible landscapes and primal environments. Along with a story that keeps you on the edge of your seat while it drags you into the depths of what the human spirit can endure. This movie is emblematic of the American Western genre for its depiction of what it meant to survive in the harsh American West in an effort to strike out into the unknown in the name of exploration and freedom.

Television:

# 1 TV Show

If was difficult to pick a winner in this category but while Firefly is an amazing western (even though it takes place in the future and in space) Godless wonderfully encapsulates everything I love about westerns into a gritty tale about survival in the old west. The acting is amazing. The cinematography is top notch. The story is dramatic, fun, suspenseful, and exciting in a wonderfully balanced and compelling way. I can’t wait to watch it again. Ultimately I think I picked it because it is more realistic than Firefly and adheres to what I think a great western should be.
